Preview: NPLVIC Round 1 at Melbourne Knights

NPLVAfter months of uncertainty regarding the roll out of the NPL in Victoria, the anticipation for the beginning of a season has never been greater.

There are some intriguing fixtures scheduled for the opening round of NPLVIC but none more so than the clash between the two teams who finished first and second after the home and away season of 2013.

Melbourne Knights host the reigning champions Northcote City FC in a tantalising affair that is sure to produce quality football with two young and enthusiastic teams keen to get their season off to a great start.

Northcote City has had to deal with the departure of eight players from last year’s championship winning squad but has been able to bring in some quality additions that will no doubt maintain the reputation of the team from John Cain as one of the teams to beat in season 2014.

The Knights on the other hand have done brilliantly well to keep the majority of their 2013 squad together and adding some real quality into their team with former Knights, Anton Kovacic, Daniel Vicevic and former Northcote City youth player Rodrigo Covarrubias added to their already impressive squad from last year.

Last year’s results saw the two teams split the ledger in the wins column with Northcote City handing the Knights a 5-1 thrashing in the encounter at John Cain Memorial Park while the Knights gained the ultimate revenge at Knights Stadium becoming the first team to inflict a defeat on Northcote City in 2013 with a 1-0 courtesy of a Andrew Barisic goal.

In the lead up to the game, Coach Goran Lozanovski told northcotecity.com.au, “We could not have been granted a tougher assignment in Round 1 in my opinion, Knights stadium is always a tough place to go to at the best of times and in recent seasons they have managed to turn it into a fortress once again, so our lads will no doubt have their work cut out. I’m sure it is going to be a cracking game, Friday night, under lights at one of Melbourne’s premier football venues, how can you not be excited?”

Good luck to our boys, and we hope to see a big crowd of traveling fans.
